Ann and I set out to a forecast of 60% snow and 12 mph wind. But it was the only day both of us could go - so we braved it. Turns out it was completely calm, only a couple flurries at 11a, then warm (high 30's) milky sun. We snow shoed about 5 miles, mostly on level or slightly inclined forest roads in tracks like highways other people had made. But we did venture off trail to find Lava Lake in the forest. We used the phones to navigate and always stuck the hiking pole in the snow if it looked a little iffy for stepping. We lunched on a log at the lake. Beautiful day! My boots were great in the snowshoes and it was the first time my feet have been pain free and I didn't want to absolutely rip the snowshoes off after hiking!
For those who want to do this hike, I recommend taking the track along the road we did and continuing. You will hike along the creek with nice views of the water. Some people said they saw a herd of elk, but we missed it.
