Iron Mountain 27 July 2012

I had wanted to share this hike with someone for a very long time, as it is one of my favorites.  Jean was that person this gray cloudy Friday in July.  We set out early and as we arrived at the pass, the clouds gave way to wispy tendrils and blue sky!  Yay!  We set off on the trail in a counterclockwise direction for two reasons...I had not hiked in that direction and we wanted to see if we could get to the top of Iron Mountain so that we didn't have to share it with a bunch of people.
The flower display was magnificent - probably at its peak.  We did run into some groups of folks on the trail and at the top.  But it was still, for the most part a solitary hike and oh so beautiful.  Our view from the top was a bit restricted because the valley was socked in all day.  We were not able to see Mt Jefferson or the Sisters but we did see The Three Pyramids and a few other nearby peaks.  Jean took her husband, Dan, back the following week and they were able to see from Hood to Mt Diamond, but she reported that the flower display was past its prime.

This is the most this cone flower accomplishes!
